Life Science

The Biology Project- The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has provided a grant to Dr. Michael Gottfredsen, University of Arizona Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, to support a design team charged with developing the general structure and supportive materials needed to deliver student-oriented, highly interactive learning materials on the worldwide web. These learning materials are used to support the lecture, laboratory and discussion sessions of general education courses.

Serendip Interactive Biology- The focus of this web site is to bring the tools of learning to the Intenet. "Serendip sees the web as a tool which can make education a more interactive and exploratory process, by making freely available educational resources at a variety of levels and also, even more importantly, be making it increasingly possible to learn by doing . The focus is not on course syllabi or notes but rather on materials from which individuals can learn themselves, and particularly on those with an interactive component. "

BioInteractive- Virtual labs, animations, video, and click and learn. Great supplemental visuals.

Interactive Games

Quia.com Biology Games
Use on-line quizzes. Some great biology quizzes: (www.quia.com/dir/bio) cell organelles, animal classifications, Mendel’s Laws of Heredity, Mitosis, Cell Reproduction, etc. Make on-line quizzes. Used to be all free, don’t know if it still is. Tons of resources.

Human Anatomy

A Look Inside the Human Body- An information site on the systems of the human body.

Inner Learning On-Line- Ideal reference for students studying human anatomy and for those who just want to know more about the medical descriptions commonly used by doctors and nurses. It's the most informative and graphically detailed program for the human body. A Java compatible browser is needed to tour this site.

The Digital Anatomist Project- Look below on this web page for links to atlases of the brain, thorasic organs, and the knee.

AnatQuest: Anatomic Images Online -The National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project has produced high resolution (4096 x 2048 x 24 bits) cryosectional color images of human anatomy. The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, an R&D division of the NLM, through its Communications Engineering Branch, has created a database for this image dataset as well as for 3D rendered images of anatomic objects created from cryosectional images (cross-sections or slices).

The Brain and Nervous System

Neuroscience for Kids- This home page has been created for all students and teachers who would like to learn more about the nervous system. Enjoy the activities and experiments on your way to learning more about the brain and spinal cord.

Brain Surf - Brainsurf is a multimedia web site that introduces secondary school students and the general public to the exciting field of neuroscience. Through our fun, colorful, interactive format, individuals can learn about neuroscience research, model organisms, scientists at work, brain facts, and career opportunities. The site emphasizes work done in learning and memory in the lab of Dr. Edgar T. Walters at UT Medical School-Houston.

Society for Neurological Science-A number of resources including Brain Briefings which cover areas such as the brain in space.

Image of Brain Activity- This image shows the a separation of the brain's two hemispheres and the location of brain activity as a result of stimuli.

Brain View- This is an excellent site to visit and learn more about the brain and its function. A graphic of the medial view of the brain is outline in areas which can be linked to descriptions and graphics. Easy to understand....very straightforward.

The Skeletal System

The Bone Zone- A site designed with intermediate elementary child in mind, The Bone Zone shows a simple diagram of the skeletal system with a few fun facts.

eSkeletons Project- The Virtual Skeletons Project is funded by the Division of Undergraduate Education of the National Science Foundation as part of the interagency Digital Libraries initiative sponsored by the federal government. The purpose of this site is to enable you to view the bones of a human, gorilla, and baboon and to gather information about them from our osteology database. This site provides an interactive environment in which to examine and learn about skeletal anatomy.

The Bone Box- Pick a bone and it appears. "Kids love this."

eThemes: The Skeletal System- Mostly links to informational sites, this web page offers a wealth of links on the skeletal system.

Yoric: The Bionic Skeleton -Yorick is a "bionic" skeleton. Bionic means electronic devices and mechanical parts (called medical devices or implants) are used in place of real body parts that are damaged or that no longer work.

Manipulate Skeletal Movement- Students can explore, observe, and manipulate skeletal movement through a variety of controls. Challenge students to create smooth movements and to relate to how the body moves. Great fun and educational.

Dissecting

Frog Dissection- The virtual frog lesson is designed for high school students but works well with middle school. Actual photographs, movies, audio, and tutorials make this an outstanding place to introduce the procedures used in frog dissecting.

Froguts.com- This is a beautiful site! (As beautiful as it gets when dissecting a frog.) Complete with a prequiz and a step by step dissection. I was amazed when I was promted to select the heart and then snip it out with my interactive scissors. Wow!

Cell Biology

Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Systems- links to a variety of sites on these topics.

Cell's Alive- Stock footage, interactive diagrams, and quizzes. A great site!

What are organisms made from? An interactive tutorial on the basic structures of life.

The Virtual Cell Web PageLife Sciences Adventure- Explore the human body. This site has a lot for kids to learn and do. Worth taking a look.

Talksaver Cell Biology- What I liked about this site was the "Layman's Summary of Ideas" which described the basics of cell biology in terms perfect for the middle school student.

Cell Biology Resources- A collection of links on cell biology.

A Cell is a Small City- A webquest comparing a cell to a city. Cells, the basic units of life, can be compared to a pizza parlor, a factory, and even an entire city. These cells are busy building and breaking down macromolecules. They are at work releasing energy from foods, and then using that energy to make needed cell parts. Together, your cells function to make your body operate like a well-run business, factory or city.

The Microbe Zoo-Discover the worlds of hidden microbes by venturing through the micorbe zoo map.

Heredity

The Pea Experiment- This is an interactive pea experiment where you can breed your own hybrid pea plants!

Oceanography

GoMOOS- Gulf of Maine Oceanic Obseving Systems: "GoMOOS is a national pilot program designed to bring hourly oceanographic data from the Gulf of Maine to all those who need it. Collects hourly bouy data including wind, wave, visibility, air temperature, water temperatures at various depths, salinity and more. Ocean conditions, biological data, circulation forecasts, and satellite imagery can also be found at this site. Projects on nutrients, plankton, right whales and new technologies are also being developed at this time.

Pond Science

Virtual Dip in the Pond- take a dip in the jar to learn about some common types of smaller pond life. How to collect microscopic pond life, a pond life collection kit, and more.
