MAEA Youth Art Month Show

t’s March – and National Youth Art Month. And to bring National Youth Art Month to Maine, the Portland Museum of Art is collaborating with the Maine Art Education Association to display art from students in grades K through 12 around the state. Thirteen Portland Public Schools’ students have their work included in this fun and inspiring show.

Youth Art Month in Maine at the Portland Museum of Art is an annual observance that dates back more than 20 years. It emphasizes the value of art education and encourages support for quality school art programs. The event comes with a reception and an exhibition that showcases student artwork in a variety of media. The opening reception is Saturday, March 7,  from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the museum. The event is free for all.

Portland Public Schools' art teachers selected the following students’ artwork for inclusion in the show:

  • Matilda Moody, kindergarten, East End Community School
  • Maisie Robinson, grade 1, Longfellow Elementary school
  • Lucinda Viola, grade 3, Lyseth Elementary School
  • Mallory Nhor, grade 3, Ocean Avenue Elementary school
  • Jillian Luetje, grade 1, Presumpscot Elementary School;
  • Faysal Hagi, grade 3, Reiche Elementary School
  • Ella Pillsbury, grade 5, Riverton Elementary School
  • Mbacthana Muka, grade 8, Lyman Moore Middle School
  • Kayla Thoits, grade 12, Deering High School
  • Theo Howe, grade 9, Deering High School
  • Berta Lindos, grade 11, Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS)
  • Anna Kiselevich, grade 11, Portland High School
  • Elahe Seddiqi, grade 10, Portland High School

“Congratulations to all artists! It is quite an honor to be selected,” said Allison Villani, art teacher at Reiche and Presumpscot and the district’s art coordinator.

The art will be on view at the museum through March 29.

Anna Kiselevich, a Portland High School junior, created a poster for the show, based on a portrait she did that is on exhibition as part of the show.
