I'm a pencil on the desk of the
author Richard F. Newcomb. The desk is very cluttered with papers, past
books such as U.S. Destroyers of the World Wars and U.S. Cruisers. I was
in a very crowed can of broken pencils and dead pens I hoped i would not
end up like the rest of the pencils in the jar broken, dead, not useable.
That would not be a very good thing.
Richard F. Newcomb is writing one of his new books called
Iwo Jima. The
other pencils in the cup were being sharpened.
I yelled, " Let me down I do
not want to be broken."
Richard asked, " Who said that?"
I cried, " Do not break me,
I'm just a poor pencil I have no arms or legs."
Richard thought, " I must be
going nuts a pencil cant talk."
He dropped me and I said, "
Ouch watch the lead."
He went back to typing the book
he was writing, and forgot about the note to himself. He was now writing
the book "Abandon Ship!"
He was typing, " Captain McVay
gave the order to ABANDON SHIP!"
I may not have any arms or legs but
I am writing a note of that for later. He looked to be in his late 40's,
but that was hard to decide because he had not lost much hair but his hair
was gray. That may have been because it saidon his desk that he was a collage
professor. He was a professor at Fresno which is now California State University.
I was now going into his shirt pocket , butI did
not know at the time, but now I do I was at the U.S. Naval Reserve in California.
He was a long term member and was a Journeyman marine electrician. When
he was a professor at Fresno he was part of, The Industrial Technology
program was in early development in 1957,he became the coordinator for
the program.
