Proficiency Based Learning (PBL)

Progress Reports are shared half-way through each trimester and Report Cards are shared at the end of each trimester.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact teachers, school counselors, and administrators with any questions or concerns they may have about their student’s performance.

Since 2017-2018, Portland Public Middle School students have earned grades on a 4 point scale for both Academics and Habits of Work and Learning (HOWLs).

Academic Content and Skills are common across all three middle schools and exist as a set of course standards and learning targets for each class.  These will be shared by individual teachers and used to give meaningful feedback to students on their academic performance and progress.

For academic knowledge and skills, the scale is as follows:

Habits of Work and Learning are the key universal skills students need to develop to be successful in and beyond middle school. At Moore, we are committed to providing regular feedback to every student to help them improve and grow in these three areas: Respect, Responsibility, and Perseverance. When students show growth and consistent performance in these three areas, they connect with others and achieve academically. We believe HOWLs are the key to building interpersonal and academic skills, and to mastering academic content.

For HOWLs, the scale for individual assignments/feedback/grades is as follows:

  • 4 - I did independently.
  • 3 - I did with few reminders/supports.
  • 2 - I did with multiple reminders/supports.
  • 1 - Even with reminders/supports, I didn’t yet.

For overall HOWLs grades on a report card, a score will be reported for each of the three HOWLs as follows:
