Moore Has New Assistant Principal

Emily Wells, a Lyman Moore Middle School mentor teacher who has served on the school’s leadership team, is now the school’s new assistant principal. The Board of Public Education voted Sept. 3 to approve her one-year appointment to that role.

Wells was thrilled to join the Portland Public Schools in 2015, returning to her hometown. At Moore Middle School, she has served as a special education teacher and case manager, the special education building-based liaison, and an English language arts teacher. She also has served on the school’s leadership team as both content and house team leads, in addition to being a mentor teacher. Wells is excited to work with Moore Principal Darralynn Jones to build a community that is “Moore Together.”

Jones was the school’s assistant principal until she was appointed as principal in July 2024.

Wells began her teaching career in the South Bronx, working at both the high school and middle school level, and was recognized in 2012 with the Bob Costas Award of the Teaching of Writing by the College Board. She later worked in East Oakland, Calif., gaining leadership experience as a lead and mentor teacher and common core instructional driver for the Aspire Charter School network. During a sabbatical from the Portland Public Schools in 2019 and 2020, she gained international experience teaching secondary English literature and history at Maru-a-Pula, in Gaborone, Botswana.

Emily attended Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, graduating with a bachelor’s of arts in Africana studies and history, and was the captain of the swim team. She later earned her master’s degree in urban education and special education from Mercy College in New York City. Emily lives in Portland with her partner and their dog.
